Getting to know Virginia – Alexandria (Old Town)

I love Old Town. We’ve been visiting Alexandria for the last several years. It’s right on the water, upper King Street has a lot of the commercial retail shops, but lower down are the unique little boutiques and restaurants.

We also love going to the King Street Art Festival in September. We usually see the same artists and vendors year after year, but Alexandria is just such a nice town to visit! Traffic and parking can be a little bit of a nightmare, but we’ve been successful at finding close, free parking the last couple of years so we’ll continue to go back!

Doesn’t hurt that a Chevy’s Mexican Restaurant is 10 minutes away…double the fun!

This year we parked a few blocks away and I shot these to/from the festival. Just a little snippet of what the town has to offer. This will be a work in progress and I’ll continue to add pictures as I take them.

Random deer on the facade? No, actually it is the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. I have never heard of an Elk Lodge…Moose Lodge sure, but never an Elk. So I had to research what the BPOE stood for…

September 2014

It was a rainy King Street Art Festival this year, but always worth the trip!

Best of Richmond

Thank you, Richmond, for providing THE best sunset that I’ve seen from you since I moved here 10+ years ago. Thank you for providing the pinks and reds that I have only seen in Arizona. Thank you for a gorgeous sunset!

The color has not been enhanced or altered in any way. This is exactly what my eye saw this evening.

Getting to know Virginia – Occoquan

Ock-a-kwan? Ack-a-con?!?

Awk – like awkward – a – soft aaah not a hard aaapple – quan – like quality. Occoquan!

More info can be found here: http://www.historicoccoquan.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occoquan,_Virginia

Only an hour and a half North of Richmond, we visited this quaint and quiet little town back in June for the Spring Craft Show. Felt more like Dante’s Craft Show as hot and humid as it was! We ate lunch first and then only walked around for a few minutes because the heat was just too stifling to enjoy ourselves. But there was a ton of architecture I would love to go back and shoot.

Most, actually all, of the shots I took were at lunch because there were at least fans blowing (we had to eat outside) and we were in the shade. But we were still puddles of grossness by the time we finished our meal. I was just not in the mood to take any more pictures after that :(

But the restaurant was right on the river, so the scenery kept us a tiny bit distracted from the heat ;-)

I’ll add more after I go back for round two.
