Flagstaff & Sedona AZ

I went to college in Flagstaff, Arizona, and I really wish my penchant for photography had blossomed when I was there. I developed a curiosity for it during my Black and White Photography class (pun intended!), but that was in my Sophomore year and was back in the day before digital cameras.

Now that I have a strong passion for photography, I really want to go back! Most of these were shot with my Ricoh, the SLR my mom bought me for my photography class, and scanned in, so the quality is not anywhere near what I wish it were. Which is why I want to go back ;-) That and I miss the west side.

This is a shot from my dorm room window my freshman year. Miss those mountains!

Snowbowl – Yes, it snows in Arizona. Campus was around 7k ft up and I think Snowbowl, at the top, was around 11k.

Sedona is about an hour south of Flagstaff. I spent many Saturdays driving down there and enjoying the scenery. It has the most amazing colors you will ever find in nature. These pictures in no way shape or form do it any justice. MUST GO BACK!

Bell Rock – probably the most recognizable formation in Sedona. This is maybe the only shot I have that actually comes close to the awesomeness that is Sedona.

Slide Rock – exactly like it sounds, a free, natural water park ;-)

Grasshopper Point – a popular place to go cliff diving. That was one of my roommates jumping. It’s exhilarating, to say the least!

Also nearby Flagstaff is the Grand Canyon. I would have gone more often, but the $20 entrance fee was a little steep for a poor college student. Again, NEED TO GO BACK AND TAKE BETTER PICTURES!

I went back to Arizona a couple of years after I graduated to go to a college roommates wedding (the jumper!) and a classmates’ baby shower. Even after living there for four years, I never made it to Lake Powell or Antelope Canyon, places I ended up driving to on a whim while I was back in town. WHY DIDN’T I SPEND MORE TIME EXPLORING WHEN I LIVED THERE?!?!

They are right on the border of Utah.

PD_0325

I’ve never seen a lake that color before.

There is an upper and a lower canyon. I don’t remember which I went to, but I do know it was the less popular of the two. The other one has the famous light streaming through it into a cave. Not.the.one.I.went.to! But the one I hiked was amazingly beautiful. Broken record; I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to go back!

Wilmington DE & Philadelphia PA 2013

I highly recommend a visit to Philly! It reminded me of DC, only 10 times bigger. And I definitely want to go back to Delaware and see more of it!

Welcome to Delaware. Period. Period? I’ve never seen a welcome sign state a declarative sentence. Or NOT have some type of picture. The State bird, a picture, something. Nope. Just Welcome to our State. Period.

DSCN7768

The trip started off in Wilmington at the Inn at Montchanin Village. It was once a part of the Winterthur estate, which was the home and estate of the du Pont family. The “Inn” is actually 11 restored buildings with 28 rooms and suites that look like a beautifully serene look into the past.

DSCN7374 DSCN7392DSCN7381 DSCN7383DSCN7372 DSCN7373 DSCN7375mcmDSCN7379

Breakfast in the morning was on-site at the Krazy Kats Restaurant. As it’s name-sake suggests, it was filled with unusual cat and dog themed decor.

A few other shots in and around the Inn.

DSCN7396 DSCN7391 DSCN7385 DSCN7398

There were signs posted all around with inspirational or comical sayings.

DSCN7397

There was a mushroom growing on the tree ;-)

DSCN7623mcm

After breakfast, we made our way to the Winterthur (pronounced Winter-tour) Museum, Garden and Library.

Winterthur has a very long and revolving history, but in essence was established in the early 1800s and when Henry Francis du Pont inherited the property from his father in the early 1900s, H.F. du Pont knew he wanted his home and grounds to ultimately become a museum, but didn’t wait for his death to open his home to visitors and tours.

DSCN7403 DSCN7406 DSCN7418 DSCN7423 DSCN7432DSCN7427DSCN7450 DSCN7451

We arrived a day before a Plein Art Gala at Winterthur was scheduled, so there were a ton of artists in the gardens painting for the gala.

DSCN7405 DSCN7408 DSCN7410 DSCN7411

These mushrooms were located in the children’s garden, the Enchanted Woods, which was not a part of the original garden. But I found them particularly cute because the tour guide said they had sensors that when touched, would expel a mist that the kids would dance around in. Oh to be eight again ;-)

DSCN7428

After a quick tram ride through the gardens, we arrived at the museum and house and looked around at some of the collections.

H.F. du Pont collected a variety of items, but was very interested in antiques and furniture.

DSCN7440

We then toured a part of the home where more of his collections are on display.

DSCN7500DSCN7461 DSCN7464

This room was particularly interesting. Mr. du Pont found this Chinese wallpaper and instead of cutting it because it was too tall for the walls, he extended the walls by curving the ceiling.

DSCN7470DSCN7471 DSCN7472 DSCN7474

If I was paying attention and recall this correctly, this curved staircase was acquired from an estate in North Carolina that was being demolished (I can’t find any information on the web to corroborate this, but I’m pretty sure that’s what I heard).

DSCN7476 DSCN7478DSCN7486

This is the conservatory, which we were not allowed in. The giant eagle is made of pine wood!

DSCN7483

The parquet flooring was inspired by the floor in the Louvre.

DSCN7491

There were numerous portraits of George Washington displayed in the house but the unique story about this one is that the artist painted Washington from memory, several years after the President had passed. It was said that his wife, Martha Washington, told the artist it was the best depiction of her husband she had ever seen.

DSCN7499

After the house, we toured a little of the grounds, the reflecting pool and koi ponds.

DSCN7516DSCN7548 DSCN7550DSCN7581 DSCN7586

Warning! Koi overload! I just can’t cut my selections down any further. You’ve been warned.

Our original garden guide said that these koi were so used to humans feeding them that they would actually let you pet them. I can now honestly say I’ve pet a koi. Mom got close but didn’t touch one.

DSCN7529 DSCN7527 DSCN7525 DSCN7534 DSCN7543DSCN7544 DSCN7546 DSCN7547DSCN7552mcm DSCN7555mcm DSCN7557mcm DSCN7564 DSCN7568DSCN7573 DSCN7575 DSCN7579DSCN7589 DSCN7590 DSCN7593 DSCN7594

After Winterthur, we had some time to kill before dinner so we randomly made our way to New Castle, Delaware, and drove around and went into a couple of shops.

DSCN7607 DSCN7608 DSCN7610 DSCN7612 DSCN7617 DSCN7620DSCN7621

This sign confused us later as we drove past Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia as well. Which I guess could be true because this sign says “near here.”

DSCN7609

The next day we made our way into Philly!

DSCN7627

We figured a tour bus would be the best way to traverse the city so we hopped on the double-decker bus, which offered a “hop on, hop off” option. We hopped off at the second stop at the Betsy Ross House.

DSCN7634 DSCN7636 DSCN7633 DSCN7630

Have to share the tiny, narrow, steep, spiral stairs. Can’t imagine having to go up and down those all day, every day!

DSCN7631

We hopped back on the bus and got back off at the very next stop at Independence Hall.

DSCN7658 DSCN7671DSCN7669DSCN7640 DSCN7641 DSCN7644 DSCN7648 DSCN7649

This is THE very room that the Declaration of Independence was signed!

DSCN7651

Our tour guide holding up a copy of the Declaration.

DSCN7655

I might have heard him incorrectly, but I could have sworn the guide said this was THE very chair George Washington sat in when he presided over the Constitutional Convention. Kind of hard to believe it survived all these years, but I thought that’s what he said. And sure enough, the internets have confirmed my wonderment!

DSCN7656

The Liberty Bell was just across the street so we walked over and snapped a few pictures.

DSCN7666 DSCN7662 DSCN7667

After all of that close up history, we realized that stop #3 was actually right across the street from the beginning of the bus tour, so we hopped on the bus back at the beginning and decided to ride it the entire way around, which consisted of I think 26 stops and was supposed to be about a 90 minute ride (but ended up being almost 2 hours with all of the Friday afternoon traffic).

DSCN7739

By the way, we had the bus almost completely to ourselves! Our guide was much more entertaining because there were so few of us, he gave us a ton of lesser known facts about the city ;-)

DSCN7747

Including the mythology of Mario the Magnificent, the dragon that sits near the Drexel campus. The story goes that if a student had a few too many the night before a test, they could rub the feet of Mario the morning of their test and would pass it.

DSCN7749

If I remember correctly, this is the Amtrak Headquarters. The interesting thing about this building is that is has no 90 degree angles, which means that each different direction you look at it, it will look different every time. I just love how the windows reflect the clouds and how it almost blends in with the sky.

DSCN7755mcm DSCN7756mcm

Different building, but I like how it reflects the shape of the adjacent building.

DSCN7760mcm

Camden, New Jersey was just across the water.

DSCN7765

Remember how we saw the sign for Penn’s Landing in New Castle? This is why it’s confusing. There’s a huge archway in Philly announcing his landing…

DSCN7764

It wouldn’t be a McDermott Family Vacation without SOME sort of twist. After we got back in the car after the tour bus, Mom realized she didn’t have her (expensive prescription) sunglasses with her anymore. She left them on the bus. By the time she realized it, we were in traffic headed out of Philly and on our way to dinner. So she called the next morning to see if they could mail them to her. They claimed they have never had to mail something back, the tourists always came and picked them up. Yeah right.

So we continued with our plans of heading to Valley Forge to check it out before we headed home. Well, a 45 minute trip soon turned into an hour plus trip because of an accident. We decided not to take the Valley Forge exit and instead headed back into the city to pick up Mom’s sunglasses. Needless to say, she learned her lesson of “make sure you have all of your belongings with you before getting off the bus.”

But all in all, it was a very nice vacation and we have thrown around the idea of going back in the Spring to check out the gardens at Winterthur when the azaleas are blooming…and maybe checking out a beach or two further south in Delaware ;-)

Asheville NC 2013

Take II in Asheville, North Carolina! Mom had a conference there earlier this month, so of course I tagged along. Weather was still a bit hot and sticky, but turned beautiful just in time for us to leave ;-)

Tuesday

We stayed in the notable Grove Park Inn, which just celebrated its 100th year in business. I have to add we stayed in the original, 100-year-old part of the hotel too. The below picture is not mine, unfortunately, it was taken off of the website, but the two wings on the side are newer, the middle is the original section and where we stayed.

gpi_aerial_1280x394

Everything else in this post is mine ;-)

DSCN6132

Looking down to the third floor atrium. We found out that a ghost, known as the Pink Lady, was often seen meandering around on our floor. It was said she was a mistress of a hotel guest who fell, or may have been pushed, from the sixth floor to her death. Luckily, we never saw her ;-)

Wednesday

The next morning we woke up and filled up on the breakfast buffet so we would have enough energy to tackle the Biltmore House. We visited the Biltmore on our last adventure in Asheville, but the gardens were completely barren as they were prepping it for bulbs. So we made our way over again, this time to check out the gardens. And this time, we were in luck!

After the gardens, I took a turn around the back of the house to see the view of the mountains.

Then around the front to get closer shots of the gargoyles and statues.

Another thing I didn’t get to do the last time we were there was get a full-frame picture of the house and front lawn, so I decided to make the trek up to the knoll where you could get see the view.

DSCN6304

It was very difficult to get a shot without a bus in it!

DSCN6331

Bus!

DSCN6337

After waiting at least 10 minutes, I gave up and started making my way back to the house. I should have waited a little while longer because OF COURSE the scene was clear as I was crossing the lawn!

DSCN6360

It’s quite impressive from any angle.

DSCN6363

It’s probably a really good thing that I didn’t wait longer on the hill because the MOMENT I reached the house and boarded the bus, it POURED down rain. Can we say good timing?

 DSCN6389

The bus took us over to Antler Hill Village where we rested our feet for a bit, then went to the winery for our free wine tasting ;-)

DSCN6283

We also checked out the livestock. Horses, donkeys, chickens, goats, sheep and ducks. Oh my!

DSCN6244mcm DSCN6249 DSCN6253 DSCN6254 DSCN6262mcm

We had a low-key dinner at Tupelo Honey’s. We ate there last year and couldn’t stop thinking about the homemade biscuits and blueberry jam, so we HAD to go back! And the fried okra. They call it southern popcorn. YUM!

Thursday

Mom had sessions all day so I was on my own. I had done some research of things to do in the area that I didn’t think she would want to do and found that the Aquarium of the Smokies wasn’t too far away. Only a 2 hour drive, each way, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee ;-)

The drive was gorgeous, winding through the mountains, fog rolling in and out.

Friday

I had planned on getting up and doing some hiking looking for waterfalls, but after mapquesting the night before, I discovered the hikes were at least an hour and a half away, one way. So…I decided to sleep in instead ;-)

After Mom finished up with her sessions, we headed out for some shopping and driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Any one of these houses would be fine with me, thank you.

DSCN6853DSCN6847 DSCN6849mcm

We then went back to the hotel to relax for a bit before dinner. We sat in the lobby and had a couple of drinks (well, I had a couple anyway).

This was the elevator we had to use everyday, believe it or not. It came with an elevator operator!

Dinner was in the Blue Ridge dining room where they have a seafood buffet every Friday night. I ate a lot. And I mean A LOT. When I say a lot, I mean like 7 plates worth of food. Not.Ashamed.At.All.

The view was unbelievable too ;-)

After all that food, we had to sit in the rockers in front of the giant fireplace and let it all settle.

All good things must come to an end. We had to leave Asheville behind and go back to the real world. But at least the real world has wild flowers ;-)

Asheville is a quaint, quiet, beautifully scenic place to visit to just unwind and relax. It was just what I needed.
