The things I do for kittens!

It’s another year and I have another liter of kittens in my backyard. I saw them playing on Saturday and I quickly made a plea to my family asking if they would be willing to foster them until I could get them fixed and adopted out. My two boys would not be pleased if I brought them in the house, so I needed to find somewhere else to take them. Thankfully, they agreed! And even agreed that they could handle six of them!

After careful review of all photos taken that day, I think there are actually 8 (some of the markings are different). But after showing them these cute little faces, how could anyone say no!?!

I’ve caught two so far, and will chronicle their stories separately as they will more than likely become permanent additions to the family.

Cutest Cats 3

Even though they are brothers, they couldn’t be more different. Twix is a leech and a momma’s boy and has to be near me, if not on me, at all times. He also loves to “help.” And of course by help, I mean be in the way…

…while I’m trying to read the newspaper…

…while writing notes…

…but chewing the pen isn’t enough, he must try using it…

…and then he must steal it…

…and bury it in the couch, like a squirrel with a nut…

…then when Mom digs it out, but doesn’t play with it, he stares at you wondering why it’s not moving…

Snickers on the other hand is more independent, just as loveable, but only on his own time. He likes to bite when he isn’t sure how to show his affection (don’t worry, they are “love nips,” he’s only drawn blood a few times).

DSCN9801

I have three times as many pictures of Twix because he’s always around! Whereas Snickers has a secret hiding place he likes to sleep in so is literally not around as much. But when he does come out, he’s just as cute as his sibling.

They started a routine of wrestling in the morning and I managed to snap a few in the middle of the melee.

It may look like Snickers always wins because he’s on top, but Twix somehow manages to flip him most of the time. The fights never last very long and whatever started the tiff tends to be forgotten quickly.

Getting to know Virginia – Hopewell/City Point

Hopewell is just a few minutes away from Chester on route 10. After following a few Civil War signs, I came across City Point, which overlooks the Appomattox River. According to Wikipedia: City Point was a town in Prince George County, Virginia that was annexed by the independent city of Hopewell in 1923. It served as headquarters of the Union Army during the Siege of Petersburg during the American Civil War.

It has a small pier for fishing as well as a trail that follows the river. I didn’t follow it the entire way, just long enough to shoot a few photos. It was quiet and very serene with some benches and a few picnic tables to sit and enjoy the view.

Up the hill from the water was the entrance to the National Park. It has a house and some nice grounds, but I didn’t explore further. I’ll return at a later time and add additional photos.

Getting to know Virginia – Smithfield

For Mother’s Day, the family took a nice Sunday drive to Smithfield, VA, which is about 90 minutes Southeast of Richmond.

We crossed over the Varina-Enon bridge before we turned off on to route 10.

We passed through Prince George County, home to Bubba’s Chikin & Thangs!

DSCN0602

Surry County, like many back(main)roads in Virginia, was lined with many quaint farms and farmhouses.

DSCN0552

We practically had the whole road to ourselves the entire way there and back.

We entered Smithfield, but turned the wrong way, away from historic downtown, so we turned around at Hearn’s Bait Barn & General Store.

DSCN0553

Main Street was FULL of fun, bright, old Victorian-esque homes, some of which were converted into stores and boutiques.

Main Street had a lot of cute boutiques with jewelry, handbags, soaps, gifts and more!

Smithfield is probably the most known for being the town that cured and produced Smithfield Ham. So of course, there are pigs everywhere ;-)

It was a beautiful day, Mom enjoyed the drive and enjoyed the meal Dad made for dinner. I would say it was an A++ for Mother’s Day 2014 :)
