Chrysler Museum of Art – Norfolk VA

I took the one and a half hour drive to Norfolk to see a couple of exhibits that I saw in the Times-Dispatch. The temperature was 61 degrees and there was zero traffic on the 64. The drive was absolutely lovely.

The first exhibit was Edward Burtynsky: Water. I found it mesmerizing. He used drones, helicopters, and rigged cameras on industrial equipment to get these shots.

These are part of a series titled Pivot Irrigation. I had to google it…it is a method of crop irrigation in which equipment rotates around a pivot and crops are watered with sprinklers. If you look closely at the tall picture, that is a house in the bottom left corner.

This one reminded me of an M.C. Escher sketch.DSCN8448

I took this at Brown’s Island several years ago. It’s some toxic sludge or another that collected near the shore of the James River. Gross, but there is some beauty in it. DSCN1598

The next exhibit I was interested in seeing was William Trost Richards: Seascapes. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but still interesting.

I then wandered around checking out the rest of the galleries. The Chrysler has some really fascinating items.

These are from the 18th and 19th century.

They also had quite an extensive collection of Contemporary art…I just don’t get it. This projector illuminated a video of someone’s eye…blinking, looking around, staring…I just don’t get it.

These two pieces were interesting though. The wooden one (which I had to look up because I didn’t see a plaque) is a sculpture made of Baltic birch plywood mounted on a white pedestal. It is horizontally layered birch plywood illustrating a three-dimensional representation of the Caspian Sea.DSCN8465

The light bulbs are glass radiometers (had to look that up) which consists of an airtight glass bulb, containing a partial vacuum. Inside are a set of vanes which are mounted on a spindle. The vanes rotate when exposed to light, with faster rotation for more intense light, providing a quantitative measurement of electromagnetic radiation intensity. Today the device is mainly used in physics education as a demonstration of a heat engine run by light energy, or in this case, as a piece of art.DSCN8463

They also had some neat pieces from the South Asia, Himalayas and Islamic World. I found this one particularly interesting. While it looks ferocious, it is meant to protect Buddhists from distractions on their path to enlightenment.

DSCN8488

These were from the ancient Greek and Roman art collection.

The Chrysler also has an extensive collection of Glass art.

This is a Chihuly!

There were two mirrored sculptures outside that were intriguing.

The traffic was bad on the way home, but I will definitely be returning to this museum!

Speaking of traffic, I was able to snap this picture of a hot pink, Hummer limousine, because…why not?

Wilmington DE & Longwood Gardens PA 2015

After visiting Winterthur a couple of years ago, we decided there was more to see in Delaware. I spent the weekend visiting Longwood Gardens and I highly recommend it!

We stayed at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware. It is an older hotel with lots of charm and character.

The only downside…the hallways reminded me of a creepy horror movie.

DSCN7748

Dinner was at Harry’s Seafood Grill. I had the tuna with soba noodles, so yummy! I was fortunate to catch the sunset right before dinner.

DSCN7528DSCN7532

According to their website, Longwood Gardens consists of over 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows. It is also illuminated by half a million lights during the holidays! Built by Pierre du Pont in the early 1900s, the Christmas display started in the 1960s and is still going strong.

Our timed tickets were for 4:00, so we started in the conservatory while we waited for the skies to get darker. IT. WAS. HUGE. The map said it was over 4 acres with 20+ rooms.

DSCN7551DSCN7613DSCN7571DSCN7565DSCN7572DSCN7558DSCN7573DSCN7559DSCN7564DSCN7562

The way they had it set up was you had to walk in a line to see the smaller rooms, it wasn’t just a see-what-you-feel-like-looking-at. It was claustrophobic at times and very slow going, but each room was tastefully decorated.

 DSCN7574DSCN7577DSCN7607DSCN7595DSCN7602DSCN7597DSCN7585DSCN7546

The sun had just set as we left the conservatory, but still not dark enough to enjoy the lights.

Once it did get dark, the lights were spectacular!

DSCN7659DSCN7639DSCN7640DSCN7646DSCN7649DSCN7648DSCN7658

There were a couple of ponds that reflected the trees.

Similar to the Bellagio (but on a much smaller scale), they had a fountain set to Christmas music.

If it hadn’t been so cold, I might have explored a little more, but what I did see I was very impressed by.

Myrtle Beach SC Sept 2015

Another beach trip! The water was warm, but that’s about the only good thing about Myrtle Beach. It was pretty touristy and far away and there are closer beaches. The shelling was good though!

DSCN6818

You know it’s a tourist trap when Dolly Parton’s name is involved (no offense Dolly!).

DSCN6809 DSCN6977

It was either really cloudy or raining most of the time.

DSCN6812 DSCN6955DSCN6813 DSCN6817

I ate at the Gulfstream Cafe one night. It was voted “The Best View” but…I’ve seen better. The seafood was pretty good though.

DSCN6805 DSCN6801 DSCN6797

I went to the Ripley’s Aquarium and was fairly disappointed. It was REALLY expensive, small, and the layout was chaotic. I did enjoy the shark tube with the moving walkway.

Upside down jellyfish

DSCN6832 DSCN6836

I liked the set-up with these jellyfish, they had mirrors on each side.

DSCN6837 DSCN6838 DSCN6851

Still trying to get a good shot of an octopus.

DSCN6874

Love when starfish are stuck on glass!

DSCN6882

The background makes me dizzy, but had to include because the fish is weird.

DSCN6891DSCN6895

Shark tube! I went around three times!

Myrtle Beach boasts it has 60 miles of beautiful, sandy beaches, and it does!

DSCN6979 DSCN6981 DSCN6982

I ate at Sea Captain’s House another night. Again, seafood was pretty good, but I’ve had better. It was right on the water and had a nice lawn as a waiting area. I saw this lady swinging on the bench swing and thought it was a nice moment.

DSCN6983 DSCN6984

On my last night, I just HAD to take a walk on the beach. I found a couple of sea urchins, probably THE coolest thing I’ve ever found on the beach!

DSCN6998 DSCN6995

Will I go back? Maybe. Hopefully the weather will be nicer next time.

KDH (Kill Devil Hills), OBX NC September 2010

Thought I had put all of my beach vacations up, but I was wrong! Here are some pictures of the first time I went to the OBX.

 DSC05608

Stayed at the Days Inn Mariner, right on the sand.

 DSC05470DSC05414DSC05493

These are called Devil Purses, but they are really just egg casings.

DSC05465

Jelly fish pod thingys

DSC05467 DSC05468

Where did I get that nail polish? I love that color!!

DSC05497

Beautiful sunrise!

DSC05416 DSC05435 DSC05440 DSC05442 DSC05444 DSC05446 DSC05449 DSC05452 DSC05453 DSC05456

I ate at Mulligan’s one night. I STILL have memories of the surf and turf hamburger. It was just a regular hamburger but it had a crab-cake on top. YUM!!!

DSC05480

I didn’t drive thru it (I have since), but I thought the Brew Thru was an ingenious concept!

DSC05485

Took a few shots of some of the more colorful beach houses.

DSC05478 DSC05486 DSC05488

Visited the Roanoke Island NC Aquarium in Manteo. It was small, but a nice diversion.

DSC05596DSC05504DSC05505

These were shot with my old camera and I must say I can see a major improvement from that one to my current one.

  DSC05517 DSC05528 DSC05535

Yes, that is my face. Not only has my technology improved, my technique has too.

DSC05547 DSC05550 DSC05552 DSC05553 DSC05558 DSC05560 DSC05561 DSC05566 DSC05575 DSC05592

I ate at the Sugar Shack Market, lots of fried goodness, and I enjoyed the gorgeous sunset.

DSC05611 DSC05618 DSC05619 DSC05621 DSC05622

Have I mentioned how much I love the beach? ;-)
